How to get through a late night porn urge on Android

It is usually late, you are tired, and the phone is already in your hand. Urges feel permanent while they last, and they almost never are. The trick is putting a few seconds of friction between the urge and the off switch.

Why late night is the hardest time

Tiredness lowers self control, boredom fills the hours, and the phone is within reach in bed. A decision made at midnight is rarely the one you would make at noon, and the blocker is only ever tested at midnight.

Friction beats willpower

Planning to be strong in the moment is planning with the resource you have least of. Making the harmful choice slower works better, because a pause is usually all an urge needs to fade.

With Myself as your partner, turning any protection off means retyping a full sentence exactly, with accuracy and progress shown as you go. Every mistake costs time. By the end, plenty of people have decided it is not worth it.

Set it up while you feel strong

The right time to choose your friction is a calm afternoon, not the moment you need it. Everything here is on the Blocking tab.

  1. Open the Blocking tab and tap Edit on the Accountability Partner card.
  2. Choose Myself for the typing challenge, or Time Delay if you want a 24 hour wait that no amount of determination can type through.
  3. Switch on Uninstall Protection so deleting the app is not the easy way out.
  4. In the Advanced Blocking card, leave Block unsupported browsers on so a second browser is not either.
  5. Charge the phone away from your bed.

Leave yourself a message

Under Settings, Customize Blocked Screen, you can write a line that appears on the block screen itself. Something in your own words, written by the version of you that set this up, lands differently at 1 AM than a generic refusal does.

The same screen sets an exit delay, which is how many seconds the Exit to Home Screen button stays disabled, up to a minute. Those seconds exist so the block registers instead of being swiped past on reflex.

Other things that help

Get up and change rooms when an urge hits, drink some water, message a friend. The physical change of state does more than arguing with yourself does. If the urges feel beyond your control, talking to a doctor or a counsellor is a good next step and not an overreaction.

Frequently asked questions

Will a typing challenge really stop me?

It does not make anything impossible, it makes it slower. For many people that pause is enough for the urge to pass.

What if I want something stronger?

Time Delay makes every change wait 24 hours, and Friend puts a trusted person in the way. Both are harder to get past than typing.

Can I change the message on the block screen?

Yes. Settings, Customize Blocked Screen lets you write your own reminder and set how long the exit button stays disabled.
